Tracking CS Energy’s greenhouse gas emissions in FY2021

01 Mar 2022

CS Energy’s total greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 9.9 per cent in FY2021, consistent with reduced electricity generation from its power stations during the year.

CEO Andrew Bills said CS Energy’s priorities were diversifying its business as Australia’s electricity sector decarbonises and ensuring its power stations are available to meet electricity demand during this transformation.

“CS Energy is a major energy provider, so it’s critical that we continue to invest in our existing assets to support the reliable supply of electricity to homes and businesses,” Mr Bills said. “At the same time, we are investing in renewable energy and new products and services to support our customers’ decarbonisation requirements.

“CS Energy currently has more than 300 megawatts of renewable energy offtakes, offers electric vehicle charging services for large organisations and is building a renewable hydrogen demonstration project at Kogan Creek later this year.

“We aim to be a leader in delivering new energy solutions that are developed and tailored for Queensland’s future energy needs.”

Mr Bills said CS Energy’s greenhouse emissions shifted slightly each year depending on coal quality, electricity output and the mix of its generation fleet in service.

“The reduction in our emissions last financial year reflects decreased generation at Callide Power Station due to overhauls and the Unit C4 incident.

“Our other major plant, Kogan Creek Power Station, increased its generation output in FY2021. Kogan Creek is one of the most efficient coal-fired generators in Australia.

“Last year we also saw the continued trend of demand for coal-fired generation decreasing in the middle of the day when solar generation is at its highest, then rapidly increasing in the late afternoon as solar generation drops off,” Mr Bills said.

CS Energy reports its greenhouse gas emission, energy production and energy consumption annually to the Clean Energy Regulator under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Scheme.

Notes:
  • CS Energy owns and operates the Kogan Creek and Callide B power stations, and owns Callide C power station in a 50:50 joint venture with InterGen.
  • Both CS Energy’s and InterGen’s NGERS reported data includes 100 per cent of Callide C Power Station generation.
  • Renewable energy from CS Energy’s solar and wind energy offtakes are not included in our NGER data as CS Energy does not own those generation facilities.
