CS Energy supports Australia’s changing electricity generation mix

02 Mar 2023

CS Energy is continuing to diversify into renewable energy and customer-led energy solutions while operating its power stations to support security of supply during Australia’s energy transformation.

CEO Andrew Bills said CS Energy’s coal-fired power station sites would play an important role in the future energy system, as outlined in the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan (QEJP).

“The QEJP recognises that coal-fired power stations need to be operated safely and reliably through the transformation and are important in underpinning reliability and system security as more renewables and storage come online,” Mr Bills said.

“Our priorities as a publicly-owned business are to ensure our coal-fired power stations are available when the market needs them and that we add more renewable energy to our portfolio.

“CS Energy currently has almost 300 megawatts of contracted renewables to support our customers’ decarbonisation requirements and help Queensland reach its renewable targets.

“We will transform our power station sites into future clean energy hubs, starting at Kogan Creek where we are adding a grid-scale battery and green hydrogen demonstration plant.”

Our energy production and greenhouse emissions in Fy2022

The Clean Energy Regulator recently published greenhouse gas emissions, energy production and energy consumption for participants in the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Scheme.

CS Energy’s emissions vary each year depending on factors such as the volume of coal consumed, coal quality and the mix of our generation fleet in service.

Improved plant availability saw electricity generation increase by 2.4 per cent across CS Energy’s operational portfolio in FY2022 (excluding Callide Unit C4).

As a result of this increase in generation, and the mix of plant in service, CS Energy reported a 3.4 per cent increase in its greenhouse gas emissions.

Notes:

  • CS Energy owns and operates the Kogan Creek and Callide B power stations, and owns Callide C power station in a 50:50 joint venture with IG Power.
  • Both CS Energy’s and InterGen’s NGERS reported data includes 100 per cent of Callide C Power Station generation.
  • Renewable energy from CS Energy’s portfolio of solar and wind energy offtakes are not included in our NGER data as CS Energy does not have operational control of those facilities.
