CS Energy elects to complete pre-emptive work on Callide C3

19 May 2025

CS Energy and its joint venture (JV) partner have proactively taken a decision to extend the current outage of Unit C3 at Callide C Power Station by three days to enable additional pre-emptive maintenance work unrelated to the 4 April incident to be carried out on the boiler prior to its return to service.

Acting Chair of CS Energy Jeff Seeney said that, while work has progressed on the Unit C3 incident repairs according to plan, engineers have taken the opportunity to inspect other areas of the boiler that would not otherwise have been accessible until the scheduled overhaul of the entire C3 Unit in August 2025.

The pre-emptive work, already underway, will correct some deterioration and cracking found in the critical high pressure steam piping which delivers steam to the turbine, which was not related to or affected by the clinker fall in the combustion chamber on 4 April 2025.

“We are following expert engineering advice to undertake this necessary work now before returning the boiler to service as it is no longer a safe choice to leave it until the scheduled shutdown in August 2025,” Mr Seeney said.

“Following expert engineering advice and playing it safe reflects the cultural change the new Board and management is fostering at CS Energy to ensure we once again are recognised as a safe, reliable provider of electricity to Queenslanders.”

The Callide C Power Station JV approved the change this morning and has subsequently informed the market of a revised return to service for Unit C3 of 2 June 2025 (previously 30 May 2025).

Work is continuing to repair the areas of Unit C3 damaged in the major operational safety event on 4 April 2025. Approximately 100 people are working on rotating shifts six days a week, with approximately 25,000 hours worked since the project began.

CS Energy, as the operator of Callide C, will continue to assess the project schedule as works progress.
