Oxyfuel technology is a priority technology in Australia's COAL21 Fund because of its potential to be retrofitted to existing coal-fired power stations. This retrofit capability will minimise the lead-time and cost for industry to apply the technology on a commercial scale.
Oxyfuel technology also shows strong suitability for application to new coal-fired power stations.
Geosequestration utilises technologies that have been used in the oil and gas industries for many years. Callide Oxyfuel Project partner Schlumberger is researching geosequestration and will provide specialist input to this part of the project.
When combined, oxyfuel combustion and geosequestration have the potential to achieve deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired electricity generation.
